Junette Diaz
Some runners chase personal bests. Others chase sunrises, quiet breaks in their day, or just one more mile than yesterday. Junette chases finish lines in all 50 states, one half marathon at a time. 26 states in, her journey has already covered thousands of miles, dozens of race mornings, and more than a few airport terminals. What we love most about Junette’s story is that it all started as a hike with her family, and that through determination, hard work, and some seriously brilliant planning, it’s become one of the coolest running journeys we’ve seen. Here’s how the magic happened.
Rewind to the pandemic, when Junette and her family started hiking together on weekends, a simple way to stay active and get outside during a strange, uncertain time. Those hikes became a weekly ritual, one the whole family looked forward to (most weekends, anyway). But eventually, even the most enthusiastic hiking crew needed a break, and Junette's family was ready to hang up their boots for a Saturday or two. Right on cue, a friend from Junette's gym posted on Facebook that she was joining a run group. Fresh air, new people, a new challenge? It checked every box, and in March 2021, Junette joined the group, setting her running journey in motion.
That first run group helped her find her rhythm, and it didn’t take long for Junette to find her running passion. After about five months, she was itching for more, so she signed up for a local Buffalo 5K, the Moonlight Run. She had a blast and was hooked. In 2022, she went all in, racing around twenty 5Ks and even landing on Buffalo’s “most active runner” list for the sheer number of races she finished that year. (We love a runner who commits!)
Once the 5K distance felt comfortable, a friend nudged her toward the next challenge: a half marathon. Junette was nervous about taking on the longer distance (13.1 miles felt like a big jump from 3.1), but in October 2022, she signed up for the Mighty Niagara Half Marathon anyway and dove into 8 weeks of training. The half marathon tested her in ways the 5K never had, but the incredible atmosphere and crowd support carried her through mile after mile. And most importantly, she had so much fun doing it. Just like that, the door to 13.1 was officially open, and there was no closing it!
A year later, she joined a group of women heading to the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon, her first out-of-state race, and something clicked. Junette has always loved to travel, and now running gave her a reason to see new places, meet new people, and chase a finish line all in one trip. So when she started hearing about runners collecting half marathons in different states, it sounded like exactly her kind of adventure. She started close to home with races in Ohio and Pennsylvania: some as family trips (her husband and kids are still her biggest cheerleaders!), some with running friends, and some as solo missions. Before long, a fun idea had turned into a full-blown commitment: 50 states, 50 half marathons.
With 26 states now behind her, Junette is still going strong. Her original strategy was simple: knock out the closest states first and work outward from there. Then one of her run groups introduced her to a game-changing strategy: running two states in one weekend. Her first “double” was Rhode Island and Connecticut, back to back. It was tough but doable, and it taught her a lesson she's carried through every “double” (or “triple”!) since: the first race is physical, but the second is almost entirely mental. By race two, she says, you have to tell yourself you can do it and believe you'll get through it, and you always will. (We're taking notes for our own next race weekend.)
Junette has now completed six more “doubles”, pairing up Vermont and New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts, New Jersey and Delaware, and more. The strategy fills in the map faster, but it's also created some of the most memorable experiences of her running journey. She even took it a step further with the Bear Lake Trifecta this year (that “triple” we mentioned earlier): three half marathons in three days across Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. That weekend wasn't about chasing a time. It was about being outside, soaking in the scenery, and appreciating the chance to run through three beautiful places.
One thing we admire most about Junette (besides the fact that she’s the most fashionable runner we know!) is how she approaches racing. Some starting lines are about pushing her limits and seeing what she's capable of, but others are simply about being present and enjoying the journey she’s on. That mindset showed up perfectly when she raced San Francisco this year, her favorite race so far. She loved everything about it: the energy of the city, the scenery, the whole vibe. The highlight? Running across the Golden Gate Bridge. Twice. (Wow, sign us up!)
And while she's already covered a lot of the country, one destination is being saved for last on purpose: Hawaii. Junette plans to finish her 50-state journey in Maui, home to a 50-state celebration that will turn her final race into the ultimate “runcation”. After years of miles, medals, boarding passes, and car trips, she can't imagine a better place to celebrate. Hawaii won't just be state number 50. It’ll be the finish line of this incredible journey, and the starting line of the next one.
Once all 50 states are in the books, Junette plans to give herself a well-earned break before taking on her next big challenge: a full marathon. She's purposely held off on the full distance to stay focused on her 50-state goal, but once it's complete, 26.2 is officially on the list. We have no doubt she’ll crush the marathon distance just like she’s tackled every other running goal she’s set.
For anyone thinking about getting into running, Junette's biggest piece of advice is to find the version of running that feels enjoyable and meaningful to you. Run around your neighborhood. Sign up for a 5K. Train for a half. Or start crossing states, or countries, off your list. Whatever it looks like, know your “why”. Whether you run to stay active, improve your health, meet new people, or challenge yourself, that reason is what will carry you through the tough days, because there will always be hard runs and mornings when you'd rather stay in bed. Keep your “why” close, and it will keep you moving forward.
As for Junette's own why? Running has given her a challenge that keeps her sharp both physically and mentally, friendships she never expected, and places she never thought she'd see. Her running journey has become a coast-to-coast adventure, and with 24 states to go, there are plenty of finish lines still ahead. Eventually, she'll touch down in Maui, cross that final state off her list, and celebrate the full 50. Until then, she'll keep doing what got her here in the first place: finding the next challenge, enjoying the journey, and seeing just how far running can take her. We're so proud to have Junette as part of the Middle Trail community, and we can't wait to watch her tackle what’s next!

Q&A
How did you get started running?
I started running after the pandemic. I really wanted to spend more time outside, stay active, and do something that was good for both my mind and my body. I started by doing a lot of hiking, and then one day a Facebook friend posted that she was joining a run group. I decided to give it a try, and the rest is history! What started as simply wanting to be active turned into something I absolutely love and a journey to run a half marathon in all 50 states.
What is your favorite part about racing? Is it the training? Is it the race day?
Without a doubt, race day! I love everything about it - laying out my outfit the night before, waking up early, getting ready, and heading to the starting line. There’s something special about being surrounded by so many people who all have the same goal: to challenge themselves, do something difficult, and make it across that finish line.
The energy is incredible, and there’s nothing quite like the feeling of accomplishing something that you know wasn’t easy. I love the entire experience, but that race-day energy is what really keeps me coming back.
What keeps you motivated for your runs?
The fun of it all keeps me motivated, along with my goal of completing a half marathon in all 50 states. Every race gives me a new place to explore, new people to meet, and another state to check off my list.
I also really enjoy cross-training and doing whatever I can to keep my body healthy and strong so I can continue running my best. I’m intentional about taking care of myself — whether that’s strength training, massages, physical therapy, chiropractic care, or simply giving my body the recovery it needs. For me, the goal isn’t just to run more; it’s to stay healthy enough to keep enjoying the journey.
If you could give one piece of advice to help people who are looking to get into running get started, what would it be?
Know your “why”. Figure out what is motivating you to start, and use that as your fuel when things get difficult. You don’t have to be the fastest runner, and you definitely don’t have to be perfect. Just start where you are and keep going.
Consistency is key. There will be good days and challenging days, but if you stay consistent, you’ll be amazed at how much stronger and better you can become over time. And most importantly, have fun with it!
What is your favorite running event that you have done and why?
My favorite is the Buffalo Half Marathon because, no matter how many places I travel to run, there really is no place like home.
I also love being able to experience the race from both sides. When I’m not running it, I enjoy volunteering and cheering on the runners. There’s something really special about seeing people push themselves toward their own finish lines and being part of that energy in my hometown.
If you could run anywhere in the world and leave today, where would you choose to go and why?
Italy! I’ve been to Italy twice, and there’s just something about that place that keeps drawing me back. I love the beauty, the culture, the food, the atmosphere…everything. I would absolutely love to go back and experience Italy through running. There would be something incredibly special about exploring such a beautiful country on foot and adding an international race to my running journey. So if someone told me I had to pack my bags today for a race anywhere in the world, Italy would definitely be at the top of my list!
